Jury Comments

This project embraces a very inventive design approach to housing and urban agriculture by weaving these together in a hybrid landscape building. The continuous, gently sloped roofs provide a generous, barrier-free growing area and amenity for its residents. The resulting form and presence in the neighbourhood is both novel and inspiring, distinguishing it from most multi-unit residential rental housing in Canada. A range of dwelling unit types support diverse household sizes, from single students to small families. Contextually, this project advances social and economic sustainability through its commitment to fostering community both within and outside its walls and by substantially offsetting the costs of food harvested from its roofs, for its agriculturally-minded inhabitants.
