Jury Comments

The jury found that this addition/renovation project although reserved was very sensitive to the context and materiality of the existing building complex. The project's shifted frontage away from Main street towards the pocket park was applauded for creating a window of interaction to promote use and activity in the narrow public plaza.

A project that successfully reidentifies the Manitoba Museum and Alloway Hall within the Manitoba Centennial Centre Campus and upon approach from James Ave. The choice of form and exterior building cladding maintains the vernacular palette that celebrates its novelty in its early stage before patinating itself over time as it will quiet with age. The addition and recladding provide a contrasting palette of materials against the existing buildings within the sunken Steinkop Gardens. The copper cladding through reflection and refraction is able to a bring warm movement of light into the gardens redefining scale and a sense of place.

A crisp intervention that brings light to a renewal project within the Museum, while breathing new life into an urban pedestrian passage.
